THE BERNICE SAMALONIS SOCIAL STUDIES AWARD

Applications invited from:
Matriculated students pursuing certification in Secondary Social Studies, Citizenship, Social Science Education or in Elementary Education with a minor/concentration in a Social Science content area at a recognized Institution of Higher Education in the Middle Atlantic States area

Scholarship: $500

Requirements:
·         A demonstrated intent to teach Social Studies in elementary, middle or high school
·         A full-time student about to enter the junior or senior year of an undergraduate certification program or the first year of graduate certification program
·         A 3.0 or above GPA
·         It is expected that the scholarship winner will be present at the MSCSS conference in Baltimore (March 8-10, 2012) and receive his/her award. 

Submit the following items:
·          1) Resume 500 word statement of your career goals
·          2) Recommendations from two (2) current professors
3) Official academic transcript

Important tip for all Social Studies Ed Students

Important! Be sure to save ALL graded assignments and syllabi throughout your college career--including your courses in the AA Program!

You will need to provide selected assignments and syllabi in order to submit the required Learning Portfolio early in the spring semester of your junior year.


Create folders (both hard copy  and electronic) so that you can save and access these materials for the Learning Portfolio requirement.

History and Social Studies Education Orientation and Information Meeting

Tuesday, September 27th
Gore Hall 116
 5:00-6:30 p.m.

All Freshman Social Studies Education majors, new transfer students, and anyone else who has not attended a previous session are required to attend this meeting. 

We will:
·      introduce you to the program
·      go over the key elements of each stage of the program, such as testing and portfolio requirements,  when to take education courses, and when to apply for student teaching.

Hurricane Irene Causes Fall 2011 Semester Delay for UD Students

Fall semester classes will begin at 8 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 1. New Student Convocation and New Graduate Student Convocation, originally scheduled on Aug. 29, are canceled.

Jon Scheer Returns to the Men’s Soccer Team as a Part-Time Assistant Coach. Scheer, who graduated from the University in May 2011 with a degree in history education, will serve as Hennessy’s top assistant in 2011.

New student orientation originally scheduled on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 9:00 am has been canceled due to Hurricane Irene.

1743 Welcome Days and all weekend activities have been canceled. Classes will not begin on Tuesday, Aug. 30, as originally scheduled.
